Program Note: I started writing the original version of this clarinet concerto in the summer of 2019 for a colleague of mine who asked me to write him a piece. The original concerto only consisted of one movement without a title for solo clarinet and piano. I chose to write the entire piece in the key of Bb due to the tempo and the virtuosic flourishes I planned to write. Eventually, I finished writing the concerto and planned to premiere the piece in 2020. Due to the COVID pandemic, the premiere of the piece never happened.

During the summer of the pandemic, I decided to make this piece a real concerto by adding a second and third movement to complete the set. At this time the concerto was still only written for clarinet and piano but now with individual titles representing the character of each of the movements.

Dr. Phillips approached me with the idea of expanding the concerto into a bigger work for clarinet and wind ensemble which prompted the birth of the version we have today. This work went on to win the Alabama Music Educators Association Young Composers Award in 2023.
