Program Note: “Obsidian Hellfire” is a feisty dance piece for wind ensemble meant to excite both the musicians and audience from start to finish. Starting with the first statement of the dance theme in the solo double bass, the theme quickly gets passed to the percussion ensemble and eventually throughout all sections with different variations. “Obsidian Hellfire” has flares of Latin and Arab influence filled with woodwind flourishes, boisterous brass, and climatic percussion always providing the feeling of HIGHER, FASTER, LOUDER!!

“Obsidian Hellfire” went on to win the Alabama Music Educators Association Young Composers Award in 2025.
